Color My World

sinofoma.com
At this time of year, I yearn to see the rainbow hues of spring bulbs, especially tulips with their
endless variety of color.  When starting a design project, I always ask the client, "what's your favorite
color?"  In the photo above, the homeowner isn't afraid to be surrounded with luscious colors on all the components of the room.  This room makes me feel happy because I love color, but I know that some people are afraid of incorporating too much color in their interiors.  As a designer, I can help
them enjoy the use of color in many different ways.  One of the first things to consider is a using a favorite piece of artwork as an inspiration piece.  The following photos are examples of rooms whose color schemes take direction from a painting. The wall colors, carpets, furnishings and pillows all derive from the focal point in the room which is the artwork.

Besides artwork, I often use carpet as an inspiration for a new color scheme. In the photos below,
the colors in the carpets were used to select the furnishings and pillow accents.  The white walls offset the cheery colors and keep the diversity of color to a minimum.

The use of one favorite color throughout an entire room is visible in the next three photos where yellow, lavender, and orange reign supreme. This is a good indication of the personality of the homeowner and how it relates to the meaning of these colors, be it cheery optimism, passionate creativity, or youthful happiness.

With a courageous client, I can suggest using more than one color on the walls to highlight a specific area or add drama to a room.  This is a good technique to include a favorite color that doesn't overwhelm the design scheme.

It's important to know about the color wheel because using complementary colors creates a very pleasing contrast in home decor.  The following photos showcase the success of using opposite colors
for beautiful results.  Tones of blue from aqua to cobalt and tones of yellow from gold to orange are especially popular combinations.

I like to create a mood with color which relates to specific areas of the home. The following photos emphasize the peaceful tranquility evident in the soft blue bedroom or the comfortable warmth of the brown family room or the happy vitality of the pink living room.

Jolts of color to otherwise neutral or one-toned backgrounds add energy and excitement to the spaces.

There are many ways to live with color. Whether used sparingly or splashed around all the interiors,
color gives life to our environments.  What inspires you to use color in your home?
